The Great Sports Blogger Study of 2007
There are plenty of stereotypes of sports bloggers: guys in their underwear in a basement, in their underwear but not necessarily in a basement, guys in their pj’s in their parents’ basement, and … actually that’s about all that’s known with any certainty about bloggers. Because the medium provides a level of anonymity, it’s difficult to know much about bloggers aside from the occasional interview or blogger beauty contest.
We thought it would be interesting to learn more about who sports bloggers are as a group - why they do what they do, how long they’ve been doing it, how blogging fits into their lives, and which floor they live on.
If you’re a sports blogger, help educate the rest of the media by taking the survey. First, a few words about intent and privacy. This is not a Ballhype usage, usability, or marketing study. We promise not to use this data in any commercial way or share your answers with anyone except as follows: We will write a report publishing the data, but all multiple-choice answers will be shared only in aggregate. No one will ever know your personal information or opinions. You may request that open-ended comments be published anonymously or with attribution. And finally, we have no illusions that this will be a scientific, statistically valid study. But it will still be very cool to see the results and break new ground!
The survey will be open for responses until midnight on Saturday, July 28. We’ll publish the results the following week on Ballhype.
Sports bloggers, procrastinate for just a few more minutes and please take the survey.
UPDATE: the results are in! Read the report.
[…] you’re a sports blogger, be sure to partake in Ballhype’s Great Sports Blogger Study of 2007. It’s a brief (and I mean brief) survey that should help clarify (or reinforce) some common […]
I’ve wanted to do a study of blogger demographics for months, but realized I couldn’t get enough bloggers to my blog to make it meaningful. Great idea! But wait…doesn’t this allow you to provide advertisers with a better idea of the financial heft of your core readers? Clever
although yes, there is that scientific validity issue.
Well, we were hoping that our Switzerland-type status in the blogging community would make it easy for us to do this survey. I’m glad you raise the question about the attractiveness of this data to advertisers. I’m going to be wordy, only because we considered this at length before doing the survey.
In three parts:
1) bloggers make up just a small portion of the audience on Ballhype (although quite naturally they seem to be the most active), so this survey is not an accurate representation of the site users
2) advertisers wouldn’t care so much about how much money people make from their blogs (since it’s usually so small) - they’d care about household income, which is why we deliberately did not ask that question
3) we said we wouldn’t share the information with advertisers, and we won’t. If we ever do an audience survey for that purpose, we’ll be upfront about it.
And we’re approaching a very respectable sample size - I’m brushing up on my statistics as we speak
Oops! I feel pretty stupid now; I merrily wizzed past the part that said “not to use this data in any commercial way” under the pictures.
Are we going to be able to see the study?? How can we get a copy? I am a sports blogger, but I dont want to participate unless I can see the results, only fair.
The survey was closed on July 28th but you can see the results here - http://ballhype.com/story/2007_ballhype_sports_blogger_study/
